The bronze patrimony of the sanctuary of Loreto
stands out for the enormus quantity and surprising quality of
ist works of art, which made of the Loreto-Recanati school of
bronze one the highest rating within the late Italian Renaissance
period. The genesis of this trdition comes about within the workshop
of Aurelio and Girolamo Lombardi, who are responsible for the
statues whichhave decorated the basilica of Loreto since 1540.It
is upon request of the cardinal Giulio Feltrio, a brother of
the duke of Urbino, that in 1568,the school forms the splendid
doors that are destined for the votive chucrh of the Holy House, decictingscenes
from the life Christ. But the masterpiecer of the metal melting
plant are the three doors of the sanctuarity, designed upon requst
of cardinal Gallo far the jubilee of 1600:the central door is
to bo designed by Antonio Lombardi,a son of Girolamo, whil the
two lateral doors are to be designed by the two greatest scholars
of this particular school:Antonio Calcagni and Tiburzio Vergelli. The
doors tell the story of the Old Testament and to due to their
beauty they were often compared to the so-called
doors"of Heaven"by Ghilberti in Florence,We owe the
splendid monument to Sisto V to Vergelli and Calcagni, which
is situated in the courtyard of the basilica:on the pedestal
lie thestatues of the four virtues and evangelicad scenes.Another
exstraordinary work of art is the baptislam font whichwas formed
by Vergelli in 1607.The last bronze masterpiece are the statues
of the Tritons on the dolphin's backs in the Fontana Maggiore
which must be attributed to the work of the Jacometti brothers(1622)
