The Donation:
The Museum of the Holy House

Downthrough the centuries, the sanctuary, following donations made by the faithful, constituted a patrimony
of gold objects and art piecer of exrtraordinary value.Part of the"treasure"of teh Holly House(estimated to
be seven million in gold and silver end of the XVIII century)left Loreto for Rome hidden in large casks in order
to escape Napoleon's pillagges:it never returnerd.

The remaining part was looted by the French. What had
been recostituted by 1815 was stolen in 1972.Despite this however,in the 28 chambers of the Hloy House,
there are still some works of art immense artistic value.Among these are the last workcsof Lorenzo Lotto,
the mervellous collection of Majolica ware(over 500 pieces)from the workshops of Orazio Fontana and the
Patnzzi's , donated to the sanctuary by the dukes of Urbino;the Flemish tapestries made of material
on paper by Raffaello Sanzio. One can also admire the precious furniture and the room where the pontiffis
visiting Loreto always slept. The preparatory sketches drawn by Maccari for the frescoes of the dome are
particulary beautiful.Works of art by contemporary artists give a sense of continuity to the artistic
tradition of the sanctuary .
