The ernormous manifastation of devotion of
all of Cristianity,of which the votive chapel was the boject, encouraged
the Roman Pontiffs to develop the construction of imposing
architectures which would be capable of bearing witness
to the importance of the place and the magnificence of the
Church. The greatest patron popes therefore senttheir most
famous artists to Loreto in order to create "magnificent
things"there.Among these we call to mind PaoloII Barbo,SistoIV
and Giulio II della Rovere Leone X and Clemente IIV dei
Medici,Sisto V Peretti(who,in 1586 rendered Loreto independent
from Recanati its mpther city)Paolo V Borghese, and Benedetto
XIV Lambertini. The best architects between Humanism and
The Renaissance also co-operated in this great building,in
such a way that it is quite difficult to attribute the general
desingn to anyone in particular, while it appears more correct
to specify that as the building progressed each of them
placed his genius and inventiveness where others had left
theirs.In any case,the overall design,following the interventions
by Giovanni Alberti from Milan(1468-69)and Marino di Marco
Cedrino(1471)who gave it a plant which is linked to the
stylistic stsndsrds of the Venetian gothic style,is probably
owed to Giuliano da Maiano(recent theories propose that
it be attributed also to Baccio Pontelli-who most certainly
designed the biutiful rounds on the apses of the basilica
or it actually may be attributed to Francesco di Giorgio
Martini form Siena). In May 1500 Giugliano da Sangallo was
finishing the setting of the dome (from a chronological
point of view the second dome in the world, after Branelleschi's
dome in Florence)encompassing the Holy House definitively
within the Sanctuary. In 1571,Giovanni Boccalini from Modena
ercted the first half facede of the building, which was subsequently
finished in 1587 by Lattanzio Ventura. The apostolic palace
which surrounds the square of the basilica with its porticoes
was desegned by Bramante and built by Sansovino(1512)and
later on by Sangallo il Giovane. We owe the Fontana Maggiore
to Carlo Moderno(1604-14).Il 1750 Luigi Vantivelli erected
the bell tower, genial in the solution of the superimposed
geomertric bodies.
